This hybrid role combines hosting (seating, waitlist management, hospitality) with cashiering (POS transactions, takeout orders, payments). Ugly Dumpling Cashier/Host: Duties & Responsibilities
Your daily responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):
- First Impressions: Warmly greet every guest upon arrival with a genuine smile, eye contact, and an energetic “Welcome to Ugly Dumpling!”
- Seating Strategy: Manage the seating chart intelligently — rotate tables evenly to balance server workloads and minimize guest wait times.
- Waitlist Management: Maintain an organized waitlist (digital or paper), provide accurate wait time estimates, and call parties when their table is ready.
- Guest Inquiries: Confidently answer questions about our dumpling menu, bubble tea offerings, cocktails, allergens, and restaurant policies.
- POS Transactions: Process guest payments accurately and efficiently using our point-of-sale (POS) system — cash, credit, gift cards, and digital wallets.
- Cash Handling: Handle cash, make correct change, and follow all cash drawer procedures (no personal cash in drawer, drop large bills, etc.).
- Takeout Orders: Assist guests with placing takeout orders, double-check accuracy, and ensure timely handoff to the kitchen and guest.
- Suggestive Selling: Proactively recommend appetizers, signature bubble teas, limited-time specials, and desserts to increase check averages and enhance the guest experience.
- Problem Solving: Address guest concerns or complaints professionally — listen, apologize if needed, and escalate to management when appropriate.
- Front-of-House Cleanliness: Keep the host stand, entryway, waiting area, and checkout counter spotless, organized, and welcoming at all times.
- Opening/Closing Duties: Assist with opening tasks (restocking to-go bags, condiments, menus) and closing duties (wiping down surfaces, counting cash, locking up).
- Team Communication: Communicate clearly with servers, bussers, kitchen staff, and managers — especially about large parties, VIPs, or guest issues.
- Other Duties: Perform additional tasks as assigned by management to support front-of-house operations.
Ugly Dumpling Cashier/Host: Requirements & Essential Functions
What you’ll need to succeed in this role:
- Experience: Previous experience as a cashier, host, server assistant, or any customer-facing role is preferred — but we will train the right personality.
- Communication Skills: Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills — you’re not shy about speaking up or welcoming strangers.
- Multitasking Ability: Ability to seat a family, answer the phone, cash out a takeout guest, and smile all at the same time.
- Basic Math: Comfortable with making change, counting cash drawers, and basic arithmetic (no calculators needed).
- POS Familiarity: Experience with restaurant POS systems (Toast, Square, Aloha, or similar) is a plus.
- Guest-First Attitude: Friendly, positive, and patient — even when guests are hangry or the wait is 45 minutes.
- Professionalism: Ability to handle difficult guest interactions without taking it personally, and escalate issues when needed.
- Schedule Flexibility: Must be willing to work evenings, weekends, and holidays (our busiest times for seating and takeout).
- Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for extended periods (full shift) and lift up to 15 lbs (menus, to-go bags, supply boxes).
